Abstract

Paleomagnetic information constitutes a foremost ingredient for plate tectonic reconstructions, particularly when dealing with pre-Jurassic times: ocean crust of that age has been subducted entirely so that the marine magnetic anomaly record has disappeared. The paleomagnetic record delivers also crucial information on the geomagnetic field itself furthering insight into its generation – at time scales from weeks to millions of years. However, because rocks are open systems, paleomagnetic information is often very convolved and it is a daunting task to distil the geologically meaningful part. I will review recent methodological developments that go beyond more classically adopted approaches, illustrated by case studies dealing with the Indo-Asia collision and the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field.
