Andreas Fichtner has been selected as one of the 2008 Winners for the paper entitled ‘Theoretical background for continental- and global-scale full-waveform inversion in the time–frequency domain’.
The paper describes a novel approach to seismic tomography that is based on the fully numerical solution of the equations that govern the propagation of elastic waves in the Earth. First applications of this new technique have already lead to detailed images of the Earth’s upper mantle in the Australasian region.
